US band Bloodhound Gang booted from Russia concert

MOSCOW (AP) ? The American rock group Bloodhound Gang was kicked out of a Russian music festival and pelted with eggs after videos emerged of its bass player shoving a Russian flag down his pants at a recent concert in Ukraine. Russian prosecutors are even considering whether to open a criminal case in the matter, which comes amid a rise in U.S.-Russian tensions.

Videos posted online of Wednesday's concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa show bass player Jared Hasselhoff pushing the Russian white, blue and red flag down the front of his pants and pulling it out the back. He then shouted to the audience: "Don't tell Putin," a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The incident outraged the Russian government. Maria Minina, a spokeswoman for the weeklong Kubana festival in southern Russia, said Saturday that the band's headlining performance the previous evening had been canceled because of its treatment of the flag.

The American band is known for its sexually explicit songs, including "The Bad Touch," with its unforgettable lyrics: "You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel."

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky tweeted Friday night that he had spoken with officials in the southern Krasnodar region, known as Kuban. "Bloodhound Gang is packing its bags," he said in the Twitter post. "These idiots will not perform in Kuban."

Hasselhoff was questioned Saturday by police, according to the Russian Interior Ministry, which said prosecutors have been asked to decide if the musician could be charged with defaming the Russian flag.

The bass player apologized late Friday at a news conference held at the music festival in the city of Anapa, the local Yuga.ru news portal reported. He was quoted saying that he had meant no offense and explaining that it was a band tradition for everything thrown from the stage first to be passed through his pants. Hasselhoff said he decided to throw the flag because some fans had seemed disturbed to see it hanging on the stage.

The scandal caused by the American band in Russia comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries over National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who was given temporary asylum in Russia last week to help him evade prosecution in the U.S.

As the Bloodhound Gang members were driving to the Anapa airport on Saturday, activists from a pro-Kremlin youth group threw eggs and tomatoes at their vehicle, Yuga.ru reported.

The band members were taken off their afternoon flight to Moscow after they had already boarded the plane, Russian news agencies reported, citing airline officials. After being questioned by transport police, they took a later flight, the reports said.

Police: Explosion at UK mosque is 'terrorist incident'

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

LONDON - A suspected nail bomb explosion near a mosque in Britain is being treated as a ?terrorist incident,? police said Friday, highlighting tensions in the wake of the slaying of a soldier.

There were no reports of injuries following the blast in Tipton, near Birmingham, England.

The explosion came on the same day as a high-profile funeral for British serviceman Lee Rigby, who was hacked to death on a street London in broad daylight.

Rigby?s May 22 killing shocked the country, and has been followed by a series of apparent attacks on mosques or places of Islamic worship.

In June, a fire at a London community center was linked to anti-Muslim protesters.

?An investigation is being led by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit and it is being treated as a terrorist incident,? the West Midlands Police said on its website Friday.

?Some residents have reported finding debris in the area and finding nails. This is being investigated by forensic officers at the scene.''

Hours earlier, over a thousand well-wishers including Prime Minister David Cameron gathered at a military funeral on Friday for Rigby, who was 25.

One of the men charged with murdering soldier Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich appeared in court for the first time. Michael Adebolajo appeared clutching a copy of the Koran, and asked to known as Mujahid Abu Hamza. ITV's Ben Chapman reports.??

Rigby's son Jack, 2, wore a T-shirt bearing the words "My daddy, my hero" on the back.

"People were shocked at what happened on the streets of Britain," said Dennis McCormick, a 65-year-old veteran from the parachute regiment who had traveled from Glasgow in Scotland to be one of the first to arrive at the church near Manchester.?

"It's horrendous, I couldn't believe it at the time. It's sad that it's got to come to that," he said, dressed in a green and black tartan uniform, with a red poppy on his lapel, a sign of respect to fallen soldiers.

Two men will stand trial over Rigby?s death in November.

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley subpoenaed to testify in police-torture case

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley was served with a subpoena Friday to testify at an evidentiary hearing for a rape convict who says he was framed decades ago when Daley was Cook County?s elected state?s attorney.

The legal move involves a post-conviction petition by Stanley Wrice, who was found guilty in a 1982 gang rape but says he was tortured by Chicago Police into giving a false confession.

Daley, the county?s top prosecutor from 1980 to 1989, was subpoenaed through Katten Muchin Rosenman, the law firm with which he is now affiliated.

Wrice, 59, is serving a 100-year prison sentence at the downstate Pontiac Correctional Center after being convicted of charges including rape.

In January, Cook County Circuit Judge Evelyn Clay granted Wrice a hearing on his claims that two detectives from the Chicago Police Department working for then-Cmdr. Jon Burge beat the confession out of him.

Burge is serving a four-year federal prison sentence for perjury in connection with his testimony in a civil case involving allegations that he and his detectives tortured suspects.

The hearing for Wrice is scheduled for Sept. 23. His attorneys plan to ask Daley under oath about what he knew about allegations of torture by police.

?This is not a witch hunt,? said attorney Heidi Lambros, who is handling Wrice?s post-conviction petition without compensation along with New York lawyer Jennifer Bonjean. ?Daley was the boss. His prosecutors took the lead from him. Maybe he truly didn?t know, but he should have.?

Also Friday, Wrice?s attorneys served Illinois Appellate Judge Bertina Lampkin with a subpoena to testify at the hearing. Lampkin, who was served with the subpoena at her state office in the Loop, prosecuted Wrice as an assistant state?s attorney working under Daley, Bonjean said.

In 2011, former Gov. Jim Thompson, former U.S. Sen. Adlai Stevenson III and other legal and political heavyweights filed a ?friend of the court? brief with the Illinois Supreme Court in support of a hearing for Wrice.

The state?s high court ruled last year that Wrice should receive a hearing because the use of torture to extract a confession ?is an egregious violation? of the justice system and ?is never a harmless error.?

Prosecutors had unsuccessfully argued that even if Wrice was indeed physically coerced into confessing, that this amounted to a harmless legal error because there was enough evidence to convict him without his confession.

The case was sent back to Clay, who decided that Wrice ?successfully established a substantial showing of actual innocence.?

She pointed to an affidavit from witness Bobby Joe Williams recanting his trial testimony that Wrice had been involved in the rape. Northwestern University students, working with David Protess of the Chicago Innocence Project, obtained the sworn statement.

The judge also cited an affidavit from Wrice?s co-defendant Rodney Benson, who admitted he was involved in the rape but said Wrice wasn?t.

In 2011, a federal judge ruled that Daley could be sued as a defendant in another case, a lawsuit involving allegations of police torture. The plaintiffs in that case wanted Daley to testify under oath about what they asserted was a citywide conspiracy to cover up torture.

That case involved a lawsuit by Michael Tillman, who spent 23 years in prison for murder. Tillman claimed Burge?s detectives tortured him into a confession. But in 2012, Tillman received a $5.3 million legal settlement from the city ? so Daley never had to sit for a deposition in the case.
