US band Bloodhound Gang booted from Russia concert

MOSCOW (AP) ? The American rock group Bloodhound Gang was kicked out of a Russian music festival and pelted with eggs after videos emerged of its bass player shoving a Russian flag down his pants at a recent concert in Ukraine. Russian prosecutors are even considering whether to open a criminal case in the matter, which comes amid a rise in U.S.-Russian tensions.

Videos posted online of Wednesday's concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa show bass player Jared Hasselhoff pushing the Russian white, blue and red flag down the front of his pants and pulling it out the back. He then shouted to the audience: "Don't tell Putin," a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The incident outraged the Russian government. Maria Minina, a spokeswoman for the weeklong Kubana festival in southern Russia, said Saturday that the band's headlining performance the previous evening had been canceled because of its treatment of the flag.

The American band is known for its sexually explicit songs, including "The Bad Touch," with its unforgettable lyrics: "You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel."

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky tweeted Friday night that he had spoken with officials in the southern Krasnodar region, known as Kuban. "Bloodhound Gang is packing its bags," he said in the Twitter post. "These idiots will not perform in Kuban."

Hasselhoff was questioned Saturday by police, according to the Russian Interior Ministry, which said prosecutors have been asked to decide if the musician could be charged with defaming the Russian flag.

The bass player apologized late Friday at a news conference held at the music festival in the city of Anapa, the local Yuga.ru news portal reported. He was quoted saying that he had meant no offense and explaining that it was a band tradition for everything thrown from the stage first to be passed through his pants. Hasselhoff said he decided to throw the flag because some fans had seemed disturbed to see it hanging on the stage.

The scandal caused by the American band in Russia comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries over National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who was given temporary asylum in Russia last week to help him evade prosecution in the U.S.

As the Bloodhound Gang members were driving to the Anapa airport on Saturday, activists from a pro-Kremlin youth group threw eggs and tomatoes at their vehicle, Yuga.ru reported.

The band members were taken off their afternoon flight to Moscow after they had already boarded the plane, Russian news agencies reported, citing airline officials. After being questioned by transport police, they took a later flight, the reports said.

Police: Explosion at UK mosque is 'terrorist incident'

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

LONDON - A suspected nail bomb explosion near a mosque in Britain is being treated as a ?terrorist incident,? police said Friday, highlighting tensions in the wake of the slaying of a soldier.

There were no reports of injuries following the blast in Tipton, near Birmingham, England.

The explosion came on the same day as a high-profile funeral for British serviceman Lee Rigby, who was hacked to death on a street London in broad daylight.

Rigby?s May 22 killing shocked the country, and has been followed by a series of apparent attacks on mosques or places of Islamic worship.

In June, a fire at a London community center was linked to anti-Muslim protesters.

?An investigation is being led by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit and it is being treated as a terrorist incident,? the West Midlands Police said on its website Friday.

?Some residents have reported finding debris in the area and finding nails. This is being investigated by forensic officers at the scene.''

Hours earlier, over a thousand well-wishers including Prime Minister David Cameron gathered at a military funeral on Friday for Rigby, who was 25.

One of the men charged with murdering soldier Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich appeared in court for the first time. Michael Adebolajo appeared clutching a copy of the Koran, and asked to known as Mujahid Abu Hamza. ITV's Ben Chapman reports.??

Rigby's son Jack, 2, wore a T-shirt bearing the words "My daddy, my hero" on the back.

"People were shocked at what happened on the streets of Britain," said Dennis McCormick, a 65-year-old veteran from the parachute regiment who had traveled from Glasgow in Scotland to be one of the first to arrive at the church near Manchester.?

"It's horrendous, I couldn't believe it at the time. It's sad that it's got to come to that," he said, dressed in a green and black tartan uniform, with a red poppy on his lapel, a sign of respect to fallen soldiers.

Two men will stand trial over Rigby?s death in November.

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley subpoenaed to testify in police-torture case

Former Mayor Richard M. Daley was served with a subpoena Friday to testify at an evidentiary hearing for a rape convict who says he was framed decades ago when Daley was Cook County?s elected state?s attorney.

The legal move involves a post-conviction petition by Stanley Wrice, who was found guilty in a 1982 gang rape but says he was tortured by Chicago Police into giving a false confession.

Daley, the county?s top prosecutor from 1980 to 1989, was subpoenaed through Katten Muchin Rosenman, the law firm with which he is now affiliated.

Wrice, 59, is serving a 100-year prison sentence at the downstate Pontiac Correctional Center after being convicted of charges including rape.

In January, Cook County Circuit Judge Evelyn Clay granted Wrice a hearing on his claims that two detectives from the Chicago Police Department working for then-Cmdr. Jon Burge beat the confession out of him.

Burge is serving a four-year federal prison sentence for perjury in connection with his testimony in a civil case involving allegations that he and his detectives tortured suspects.

The hearing for Wrice is scheduled for Sept. 23. His attorneys plan to ask Daley under oath about what he knew about allegations of torture by police.

?This is not a witch hunt,? said attorney Heidi Lambros, who is handling Wrice?s post-conviction petition without compensation along with New York lawyer Jennifer Bonjean. ?Daley was the boss. His prosecutors took the lead from him. Maybe he truly didn?t know, but he should have.?

Also Friday, Wrice?s attorneys served Illinois Appellate Judge Bertina Lampkin with a subpoena to testify at the hearing. Lampkin, who was served with the subpoena at her state office in the Loop, prosecuted Wrice as an assistant state?s attorney working under Daley, Bonjean said.

In 2011, former Gov. Jim Thompson, former U.S. Sen. Adlai Stevenson III and other legal and political heavyweights filed a ?friend of the court? brief with the Illinois Supreme Court in support of a hearing for Wrice.

The state?s high court ruled last year that Wrice should receive a hearing because the use of torture to extract a confession ?is an egregious violation? of the justice system and ?is never a harmless error.?

Prosecutors had unsuccessfully argued that even if Wrice was indeed physically coerced into confessing, that this amounted to a harmless legal error because there was enough evidence to convict him without his confession.

The case was sent back to Clay, who decided that Wrice ?successfully established a substantial showing of actual innocence.?

She pointed to an affidavit from witness Bobby Joe Williams recanting his trial testimony that Wrice had been involved in the rape. Northwestern University students, working with David Protess of the Chicago Innocence Project, obtained the sworn statement.

The judge also cited an affidavit from Wrice?s co-defendant Rodney Benson, who admitted he was involved in the rape but said Wrice wasn?t.

In 2011, a federal judge ruled that Daley could be sued as a defendant in another case, a lawsuit involving allegations of police torture. The plaintiffs in that case wanted Daley to testify under oath about what they asserted was a citywide conspiracy to cover up torture.

That case involved a lawsuit by Michael Tillman, who spent 23 years in prison for murder. Tillman claimed Burge?s detectives tortured him into a confession. But in 2012, Tillman received a $5.3 million legal settlement from the city ? so Daley never had to sit for a deposition in the case.

South Carolina's 2013 Football Season: An NCAA Simulation

A simulated season laced with intrigue.

We're still more than a month removed from the regular season, but now that we're able to enjoy the 2013 football season in a digital forum, why don't we run a simulation and see how fare the Cocks?

(For the two of you wondering: I will be bringing back Our Digital Season?maybe even finishing this time!?but this is just a quick 'n dirty sim to see how things could shake out. Ya know?for funsies!)

Week 1

#8 South Carolina vs. North Carolina: Gamecocks win, 38-21.

After squandering a 10 point lead before halftime, SC outscores NC 28-7 in the second half to win the opener. DigiConnor throws 3 TDs and runs for one more. "Charlie Stewart", the far less interesting monicker assigned to digi-Jadeveon Clowney, is quiet.

Elsewhere in the league, UGA beats Clemson and Va Tech rocks Alabama.

Week 2

#7 South Carolina at #2 Georgia: Gamecocks win, 35-27.

South Carolina overcomes a halftime deficit and defeats Georgia with a late touchdown. DigiShaw puts up another 3 TDs and DigiWilds runs for 100 yards and a touchdown. Dawgs fail to heed the myriad "CHARLIE STEWART COMIN'" warnings, as he racks up 5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. After the win over Georgia, USC vaults to #3 (sound familiar?)

Meanwhile, Florida edges Miami, Notre Dame sneaks past Michigan, BYU whips Texas, and Stanford falls to San Jose State.

Week 3

#3 South Carolina v. #24 Vanderbilt: Commodores win, 38-27.

Ah, the letdown game. Despite a 17-0 first quarter lead, Vanderbilt shuts the Cocks down in the second half and scores the stinging conference upset. Kevin Franklin explodes into a mist of pure energy. Despite 162 receiving yards from digiBusta, Vandy's 492 yards of offense overwhelm.

Stanford loses again?this time only scoring 3 points on Army. Bama curbstomps A&M.

Week 4

Bye. Much woundlicking commences. Clemson loses to NC State, is now 1-2. LSU barely sneaks past Auburn.

Week 5

#10 South Carolina at UCF: Gamecocks go buckwald, 49-14.

USC scores 14 points in each of the first 3 quarters, and 7 more in the 4th. Connor throws 5 TDs. Shaq Roland catches 4 passes for 119 yards and 2 scores. Gamecocks are back to #8.

Clemson barely beats Wake Forest at home. LSU outlasts UGA. Bama only beats Ole Miss by 3.

Week 6

#8 South Carolina vs. Kentucky: Gamecocks win believably, 35-10.

The game goes about how you'd expect it. Carolina dominates on most fronts. Triple digit yards for Nick Jones. Mike Davis runs for 3 scores. Clowney finally shows up again, contributing 4 TFLs, 2 deflections and a forced fumble (although only 0.5 sacks.) Carolina somehow loses a spot in the rankings.

Mississippi State hands LSU its first loss.

Week 7

#9 South Carolina at Arkansas: Of course the Razorbacks win, 34-31.

South Carolina lead entering the 4th quarter, but Arkansas scores 15 points late to win it. Shaw plays his worst game of the season (>50 completion %, 3 INTs). The good thing is this definitely couldn't happen in real life right RIGHT? USC tumbles 6 spots to #15.

Texas wins the Red River Rivalry, an undefeated Florida beats LSU, Missouri nicks Georgia, and Washington hands Oregon its first loss.

Week 8

#15 South Carolina at Tennessee: Gamecocks stompeth, 35-10.

A game largely defined by UT's futility. Shaw throws 15 completions, all to Shaq Roland and Busta Anderson. Clowney gets a sack. After seven games, Shaw's thrown for nearly 1700 yards, 17 TDs, and 7 picks. Dylan Thompson's thrown four passes. Shaq Roland projects to 1000 yards receiving. Clowney's line: 34 tackles, 11 TFL, 2.5 sacks. Hm...

Missouri beats Florida in a battle of undefeateds lol. Clemson beats Florida State, first loss for the Noles.

Week 9

#14 Gamecocks at #4 Missouri WAIT WHAT THE HELL #4 THAT CANT BE RIGHT: Missouri wins 34-21.

Evidently the answer to the question of "How long will it take Missouri to grow into the SEC?" was "one season, according to EA's algorithms." Shaw continues to put up the same statline in virtually every game (~16 completions, ~250 yards, ~2 TDs). This more or less ends USC's shot at the division.

A&M dismantles Vanderbilt and Tennessee beats Alabama in Tuscaloosa (hey look I'm just telling you what the game told me.) Maryland beats Clemson in OT.

Week 10

#17 Gamecocks vs. Mississippi State: Gamecocks rebound, 34-24.

Gamecocks never trailed, although they never pulled away either. Hey remember what I said about Shaw's typical statline? He goes 16-232-2 against MSU. No garish stats. At #15, South Carolina is the highest-ranked 3-loss team.

Clemson falls to Virginia. Purdue upsets a then-undefeated Ohio State. Florida nips Georgia in the WLOCP. Down goes Mizzou! Thanks, UT. Miami beats FSU.

Week 11

Bye week, part deux. Oregon whoops Stanford, Alabama spanks LSU.

Week 12

#15 South Carolina v. #4 Florida: South Carolina exacts revenge, wins 44-17.

Hey guess what? Florida made 5 turnovers in this game. Including 3 fumbles. Eerie parity to last year's debacle in Gainesville. Shaw goes 23-263-2, obviously. Clowney finally has the flagship game he's been looking for: 13 tackles, 10 (!!!) TFL, 4.5 sacks. Carolina vaults to #9. Wins SEC Defensive POTW

Clemson loses to Georgia Tech, is now 5-5.

Week 13

#9 South Carolina v. FCS EAST (Coastal Carolina): 52-10.

I won't bore you with the specifics of a fake FCS blowout. Just know Shaw had 6 TD passes and Clowney had 1.5 sacks.

A&M hands LSU its fourth loss. Missouri loses again, this time to Ole Miss.

Week 14

#8 South Carolina v. Clemson: South Carolina wins 41-21.

After an early 14-0 deficit, South Carolina allows 7 points in the final 54 minutes of the game. Shaw throws for 325 yards and 4 TDs, Roland catches 111 yards, and Clowney has another big game with 11 tackles, 4 TFL and 2 sacks. Carolina ascends to #6, Clemson falls to 6-6.

Washington State stuns Washington, Michigan handles Ohio State, UF beats FSU, A&M trounces Missouri.

South Carolina finishes third in the east, behind champion Florida and Missouri. Alabama beats Florida in the SEC Championship. Now at #5, South Carolina won't get a BCS at large, but garners an invite to the Cotton Bowl against an unranked Baylor team.

Cotton Bowl

#5 South Carolina vs. Baylor: Gamecocks win it, 38-20.

Down 20-3 at the half, Carolina outscores Baylor 31-0 in the 2nd half to win big. Shaw goes 22-291-3. Roland gets over the 1,000 yard mark, hauling in 11 balls for 151 yards and 2 TD. Clowney adds 3 more TFL and a half a sack.

Oh, and Notre Dame beats Virginia Tech (?) in the NCG.

End of Regular Season: South Carolina finishes #4, 10-3 (5-3).

Lead Passer: Shaw: 3,269 yards, 36 TD, 8 INT, 58% completion

Lead Rusher: B. Wilds: 827 yards, 7 TD, 5.2 YPC

Lead Receiver: S. Roland: 75 Rec, 1,069 yards, 14 TD

Lead Tackler: Clowney: 81 tackles, 32 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 6 deflections, 4 FF. After being quiet early, Clowney rebounds for an All-SEC season.

AWARDS AND STUFF:

Holy crap! Connor won the Heisman. Get outta here. Oh hey, I got an achievement for that. Hurray!

Clowney gets 2nd team All-American. Shaw doesn't get any All-American honors, despite his Heisman. Shaq Roland, Ronald Patrick, and Clowney named to 1st team ALL-SEC. Shaw, Busta and Vic Hampton are 2nd team.

***

This brings up an intriguing rhetorical question: if you could push a button and have all the above come true, would you make it happen, or do you expect our actual season to look better in January? Going with the sim would mean a few deflating losses and another failure to reach the SECCG. But would a Heisman, a fifth victory over Clemson, a fourth over Georgia and Tennessee, a revenge spanking for Florida, and our highest all-time ranking be worth it? I don't know about you, but I'd take it in a heartbeat. How about you?

European Union to impose duty on jet fuel imports from India: report

London: The European Union will levy a 4.7 per cent duty on jet fuel imports from India in addition to cargoes from the Middle East, its two top suppliers, an EU official said, increasing risks of price rises for European airlines.

The European Union said last month it would impose the duty on imports from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states starting January 1, 2014 after removing the group from the generalised scheme of preferences (GSP), which offers trade advantages to developing economies.

India has not been removed from the GSP, but the EU will remove the waiver because its oil products have become competitive in global markets.

"Once a country becomes competitive as an exporter of a particular category of products, the tariff preference is not essential anymore," the EU official said on Thursday.

"This means that India will not benefit any more from the duty-free access to the EU market for oil products as of January 2014. Oil products imported from India will fall under the general tariff regime, which for jet fuel foresees a duty of 4.7 per cent."

Jet fuel will be the main product affected by the move, given that diesel shipments enjoy a blanket exemption from the EU duty.

The duty could lead to an increase in European jet fuel prices. European airlines have warned that the decision could cut into the embattled industry's competitive edge.

"We strongly condemn this levy as it is another tax burden imposed on airlines that have to face already so many regulatory and economic challenges," the Association of European Airlines, which represents 32 major airlines, said recently.

The levy "will further weaken the competitiveness of the European airlines", it added.

Jet fuel is the largest component of airline operating costs in Europe, representing almost 35 per cent today compared with 25 per cent a decade ago, the AEA said.

European demand for jet fuel amounted to 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) last year, of which one third was imported, most of that from the Middle East, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) and traders.

India exported an average of 57,500 barrels per day (bpd) of jet fuel per month to the EU in 2012, according to traders.

The third-largest exporter of jet fuel to Europe is South Korea, which could benefit the most from the changes in the duty system, according to traders.
