Cancer killed Calif. serial killer Richard Ramirez
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A form of cancer killed the serial killer known as the Night Stalker who terrorized Southern California in the mid-1980s, coroner's officials said Monday.
Richard Ramirez died June 7 at age 53 at a hospital where he had been taken for treatment of liver failure.
He died of complications from B-cell lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, according to the Marin County coroner's office. It listed other "significant conditions" including chronic substance abuse and hepatitis C, which is often spread by the use of intravenous drugs.
The drug abuse predated Ramirez's time in prison, said Lt. Keith Boyd, assistant chief deputy coroner.
"That's chronic drug use prior to incarceration," he said. "There's nothing to support any kind of drug use while incarcerated."
The drug use was the likely cause of the hepatitis C infection that probably lingered in Ramirez's system for a quarter-century before eventually destroying his liver, Boyd said.
Ramirez's medical records remain confidential even after his death, said Joyce Hayhoe, a spokeswoman for the federal official who controls medical care in California prisons.
Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, could not immediately say if Ramirez had any disciplinary history of using drugs or obtaining contraband in prison. His voluminous file is kept only in hard-copy and would have to be reviewed by hand, she said.
Lt. Sam Robinson, a prison spokesman, said he could not immediately comment.
Ramirez had been on death row at San Quentin State Prison since he was convicted in 1989 of 13 murders in 1984 and 1985. He also was convicted of rape, sodomy, oral copulation, burglary and attempted murder. Executions have been on hold for years, however, because of ongoing legal challenges.
Ramirez was a self-proclaimed Satanist whose trial produced gruesome details about his mutilation of his victims.
He was nicknamed the Night Stalker by the media because residents were warned to lock their doors and windows as the killings peaked during the hot summer of 1985. The killer had been entering homes through unlocked windows and doors. He then killed his victims with a gun or knife, burglarized the homes and sexually assaulted his female victims.

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Talks on a sweeping trade deal between the European Union and the United States are to get underway in Washington next month, President Barack Obama and top European Union officials said Monday.
"The EU-U.S. relationship is the biggest in the world," Obama said after meeting with European leaders at the G-8 summit in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, citing roughly the $1 trillion in trade in goods and services between the two every year.
"This potentially ground-breaking partnership would deepen those ties."
The head of the EU's executive arm, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, said a deal could bring "huge economic benefits" to both sides.
Summit host British Prime Minister David Cameron said the trade pact could create 2 million jobs.
The aim of the trans-Atlantic deal would be to promote economic growth by eliminating the import tariffs and changing regulations that keep goods made on one side of the Atlantic from being sold on the other side.
Officials have said a deal could be reached next year. But securing one will be tricky. The talks will be watched warily by interest groups and would have to be approved by each side's lawmakers and leaders before the new trade arrangements take effect.
The EU has already yielded to a demand from France to exempt the TV and movie industry from the talks. Barroso said the exception for movies and TV shows could be revisited later. Meanwhile, U.S. labor officials have also expressed skepticism.
The statement of support for the trade deal came just ahead of the opening of the Group of Eight Summit among the leaders of leading industrial nations: The U.S., Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia, plus the European Union.
The host, British Prime Minister David Cameron, greeting the arriving leaders against a backdrop of green grass and stunning lake views at the Lough Erne golf resort near the small town of Enniskillen.
Later Monday over a working dinner, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's support for the Syrian government will be a topic for discussion.
Cameron said he wanted the summit to deliver a firm plan for promoting multi-faction talks in Geneva aimed at ending the country's bloody civil war. Moscow officially shares that goal but keeps shipping military aid to the army of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Following a frosty Putin-Cameron meeting Sunday in London, the Russian leader remains opposed to plans by the West to start shipping weapons to rebels struggling to topple Assad.
Obama announced Friday that the U.S. would start sending weaponry, while Britain and France remained concerned that the firepower might end up helping anti-democratic extremists linked to Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia.

Air show: Leasing company orders 50 Airbus jets
LE BOURGET, France (AP) ? Airbus says aircraft leasing company IFLC has made a firm order for 50 single-aisle A320neo jets, which represents a robust start for the European plane maker at the Paris Air Show.
Financial details were not disclosed Monday. However, the planes have a list price of $100 million but customers often negotiate steep discounts.
The A320neo, a more fuel-efficient model than the original and widely used A320, was the star of the last Paris Air Show.
This year Airbus is hoping to attract attention to its new wide-body A350 aircraft. Airbus' Fernando Alonso said the plane's maiden flight last Friday went exactly as the simulator had predicted, and just like Airbus planes currently in operation.
Once again, the air show is expected to showcase the Airbus-Boeing rivalry.

German spy agency plans to boost Internet monitoring: Spiegel
BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's foreign intelligence agency (BND) plans to spend 100 million euros expanding its monitoring of the Internet, the weekly Der Spiegel reported on Sunday, saying the money would go on staff and technology.
The report came two days before U.S. President Barack Obama was due to visit Berlin, where he was likely to face tough questions about U.S. spying methods.
Many Germans from the former communist east still recall the blanket surveillance carried out by the Stasi secret police, and when news of Washington's covert electronic spying program PRISM broke last week, it caused outrage.
The BND was unavailable for comment.
Some German politicians criticized the plan, with Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger saying the answer to citizens' concerns about U.S. spying could not be "Let the Germans do it instead".

New Elysium Trailer: High-Tech Dystopia Never Looked So Good
It feels like we've been waiting ages for the release of Neill Blomkamp's latest movie, Elysium. But in this new trailer, we're given a more in-depth look at what's to come when the film comes out on August 9th: sublime space habitats, an earth sliding into chaos, and Matt Damon making robot jokes.
We already knew that Elysium takes today's class warfare and extrapolating it into the future, where the healthy rich minority live aboard a rotating space habitat and the diseased poor live in decaying skyscrapers on Earth. But this three minute extended trailer gives us a more fleshed-out look at the movie's production values, from its Industrial Light and Magic visual effects to its haunting, ambient soundtrack, courtesy of Ryan Amon.

Wife of ousted Madagascar leader stands by bid for power

ANTANANARIVO (Reuters) - The wife of deposed Madagascar leader Marc Ravalomanana deflected international demands to pull out of a presidential election in August, telling Reuters she will be her own woman if she wins while her husband will run the family business.
Lalao Ravalomanana's decision to run upset a deal under which leading players in a 2009 coup agreed not to contest the vote that aims to restore constitutional order after more than four years of political crisis and economic decline.
In an interview, she said she could not ignore the clamor from her husband's supporters to seek power and end food shortages on an island that is rich in minerals.
"This call came from God," said Ravalomanana, a Protestant Christian, playing down suggestions that she would be a front for her exiled husband who would exercise the real power.
"I am my own person. I will be the president. It will be his turn to run the company," said Lalao, who managed the family business empire when her husband was president. "It would be impossible for a married couple to run a country together."
Madagascar slid into turmoil that scared off investors and hurt the vital tourism industry after disc jockey-turned-politician Andry Rajoelina seized power from Marc Ravalomanana with military support. Foreign donors froze budget support and the Indian Ocean island is suspended from the African Union.
Succumbing to regional pressure, both men agreed in January not to contest the election. However, the current president Rajoelina accused Lalao of breaking this deal and rejoined the presidential race when she put herself forward in April after returning from self-imposed exile in South Africa. She had told the authorities she was visiting her sick mother.
"When I arrived at the airport I was surprised by the daily hardships. Life has got worse. I saw kids not going to school. And those who did were unable to afford any materials," she said in her first interview since returning, conducted on Thursday.
"My aim as a woman is to give the Malagasy people the spiritual food they need," she said. "Since we are made of flesh, we must also talk of food for the body," she added, while offering little by way of policies to help economic recovery.
Convicted in absentia for ordering his presidential guard to gun down anti-government protesters during demonstrations in early 2009, Marc Ravalomanana has been blocked by the Malagasy authorities from returning to the country.
FOREIGN INVESTORS
France, Madagascar's former colonial ruler, joined the African Union this week in saying it would not recognize the vote if Rajoelina, Lalao Ravalomanana and another ex president, Didier Ratsiraka, took part.
But she dismissed the idea that donors would continue to withhold aid, a stance that has forced big public spending cuts and a deterioration in social indicators that show 77 percent of households living in poverty.
"As soon as the foreigners see that there is peace, security, that we are making a difference, they will come back," the 60-year-old said. "Their hearts are not made of stone."
The economy has still not recovered from the turmoil that followed Marc Ravalomanana's removal. The World Bank forecasts it will grow just 2.6 percent in 2013, well below the 7.1 percent achieved before the crisis in 2008.
Lalao said she would lure foreign investors back but gave no details. Her husband opened the doors to multi-nationals to exploit Madagascar's deposits of oil, gold, cobalt, nickel, chrome, uranium and ilmenite, a titanium ore.
Under his watch, foreign direct investment (FDI) leapt from $85 million in 2005 to $1.2 billion in 2008, due largely to two mining projects involving Canada's Sherritt International and a subsidiary of London- and Australian-listed Rio Tinto.
However FDI slumped 30 percent to $860 million in 2010 and remained below pre-crisis levels in 2011.
Pressed on her economic experience, Lalao said she had run the family's sprawling business empire until she and her husband fled the island. "When you know how to work with the people, to share with them the fruits of growth, I know that there will be justice in this country," she said
That may grate with the family's opponents, who accuse Marc Ravalomanana of using his presidency to further his private interests and become one of the wealthiest of Madagascar's 20 million people.
Ravalomanana built up his fortune in a rags-to-riches-tale, selling yoghurt off the back of a bicycle in the capital Antananarivo in his early 20s before he secured a World Bank loan to set up his own factory.
